Solution Focused Approaches

This 2-day course gives practitioners an understanding of the basic principles of Solution Focused work plus the skills and techniques necessary to do solution focused work with hard to help clients.

Multi-session course for

Front-line practitioners, including from the voluntary sector, who work with hard-to-help children, young people and their families.

Course pre-requisites

  • Delegates will complete a pre-course questionnaire in advance of the course
  • Responses to this questionnaire will directly influence the focus and detailed content of each event in response to individual needs

Knowledge and understanding

Key principles of solution focused work

Participants will learn how to

  • Develop more collaborative partnerships with individuals and groups of clients
  • Utilise the client's strengths and strategies
  • Develop solution talk and restrict problem talk
  • Create a climate of change and expectancy
  • Use techniques such as possibility language, exceptions, future focused questions and scaling
  • Co-construct solutions
  • Use endings effectively
  • Use scaling
  • Negotiate tasks
  • Adapt the Solution Focused Model for work with clients with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities
  • Use a solution focused beginning to second and subsequent sessions
  • Plan how to use and develop these skills
  • Use the Solution Focused Reflecting Team for peer group support and group work with families

Course content and methodology

There will be some presentation by the trainer but the course will be highly participative, involving discussion around real and fictitious cases and practice in pairs and small groups

Enabling practitioners to achieve more positive outcomes for clients
