Foster Care: Training Pathway Information

Information for

HCC Foster Carers and C&F Social Workers

Presented by

Children's Services Workforce Development Team and Hampshire Fostering Service


Prospective Foster Carers:

Prospective Foster Carers will start by completing Skills to Foster with the Fostering Service, and will also be required to complete  CSFC1002 Keeping Yourself Safe eLearning: Conflict and Challenging Behaviour Awareness during their assessment period.

Prospective Foster Carers will then progress to the Preparing to Foster (Stage 2) training pre-approval.  Nominations for these courses are managed by the Fostering Service, and it is delivered as a 3 day programme (on 3 consecutive Saturdays), topics covered are detailed below.

CSFC0158 Foster Care: Preparing to Foster (Stage 2) - Day 1 - Safeguarding Children, Safer Caring, Reporting & Recording

CSFC2258 Foster Care: Preparing to Foster (Stage 2) Day 2 - Child Development & Attachment Theory Introduction

CSFC0358 Foster Care: Preparing to Foster (Stage 2) - Day 3 - Promoting Contact with Birth Families & Understanding Behaviour

Prospective Foster Carers are also required to complete the 2 day CSFC0220 Foster Care: Paediatric First Aid - 2 Day (St John's Ambulance - Bespoke Foster Carer Training) training prior to approval.


First Year - Essential Training:

Once approved, Foster Carers are required to complete the following Essential Training within the first year of approval.

Second Year - Continuous Professional Development:

The following Foster Care specific Continuous Professional Development courses are to be completed during year 2.

CSFC0023 Foster Care: Moving On and Letting Go

CSFC0029 Foster Care: Moving On and Settling In: Preparation for Adoption

CSFC0021 Foster Care: Keeping Memories and Life Stories

CSFC0220 Foster Care: Paediatric First Aid - 2 Day (St John's Ambulance - Bespoke Foster Carer Training) - Re-qualification of Paediatric First Aid training is required at periods not exceeding three year intervals prior to the certificate expiry date, through repeat attendance of the original training course

In addition to these training options, Foster Carers will continue to be able to access 'core calendar' training to meet other learning & development needs.
