Falling in Love With Science Exams – Improving GCSE Exam Outcomes Through Full Engagement With and Decoding of Texts

The GCSE Science exams involve deconstructing questions that include subject specific terminology, diagrams, unfamiliar contexts and interpretation of experimental data. To succeed in these exams, it is important that students gain confidence in these areas so that they can accurately answer the questions having fully understood what is required of them. This course will explore ways this can be successfully achieved using a variety of teaching and learning strategies throughout their study which result in increased outcomes in exams.

·  To understand the demands of the science GCSE exam questions and the barriers pupils face.

·  To explore and experience strategies to help pupils fully engage with texts to understand more fully what is required of them in an exam.

·  To use teaching and learning strategies in the classroom to improve decoding of information in order to respond more successfully when completing an exam.

Course content and methodology

·  Explanation of the demands of GCSE exams and how to use teaching and learning to overcome possible barriers.

·  Trialing strategies to use in the classroom and evaluate effectiveness in own context for which have most impact.
