HSCB - Safeguarding Disabled Children Including Those with Complex Needs

The aim of this course is to increase participant’s awareness of the particular vulnerabilities of disabled children and to provide them with an opportunity to explore ways in which we can effectively safeguard disabled children from harm. This is a Level 2/3 course on the HSCB training pathway.

Staff from Children's Services, Health and Voluntary Organisations who work, or come into contact with, disabled children and their families.

Course pre-requisites:

Delegates must have previously completed the Virtual College eLearning modules listed below, and must bring certificates of completion to this training.  Instructions for how to access Virtual College eLearning can be found here.

  • Working with Children with Disabilities

Participants will learn how to:

  • Explore the current legislation, guidance and context relating to disability and safeguarding work including Hampshire's policies and procedures
  • Review lessons learned from Serious Case Reviews involving disabled children
  • Understand the particular circumstances which make disabled children more vulnerable to abuse, including the concept of created vulnerability
  • Assess the signs and indicators presented by disabled children who may have been subjected to abuse, including any potential for confusion in interpretation
  • Understand the factors which may influence the threshold for intervention for disabled children
  • Ensure that interventions remain focused on the best interests of the child whilst working in complex situations where there are many competing priorities

Intended impact on practice:

Staff will have a greater understanding of the vulnerability and safeguarding needs of disabled children and will gain an understanding of the importance of working together effectively to improve outcomes for disabled children

Course attendance fees:

Hampshire Safeguarding Children Board (HSCB) offer free training to their partner agencies*.  In the case of non-attendance or cancellation within 48 hours of an event a fee of £120 will be incurred.  This fee will be waived if a substitute delegate is sent instead but you must let us know if this happens.  All cancellations or changes must be sent in writing to
