Introduction to Attachment Difficulties and Developmental Trauma in Children and Young People

This 3 hour workshop aims to increase understanding and awareness of attachment difficulties, increase ability to identify some of the early signs of attachment difficulties and increase knowledge of information and support services in your local area.

One day course for

Practitioners from any agency (such as Social Workers, Family Support Workers, Home School Link Workers, Foster Carers, Youth Support Workers and GPs) who work with children of at least 3 years of age, or young people with attachment difficulties, or their families, that live within the HCC boundaries.

Course pre-requisites:

  • Experience of working with children and young people with behaviour / emotional difficulties

Learning outcomes:

Participants will learn how to:

  • Have a trauma informed approach to understanding a young person's presenting difficulties
  • Understand how trauma impacts a child's development and how this impacts behaviour and learning
  • Recognise how they might help a child with trauma symptoms
  • Have a basic understanding of how to use a therapeutic parenting approach
  • Recognise the importance of how adults working together helps a young person feel safe


Course content and methodology:

  • How attachment difficulties and developmental trauma start
  • How to recognise behaviour signs in a young person
  • How trauma effects the brain and the young person's development
  • A trauma informed approach to help young people experiencing these difficulties
  • An introduction to therapeutic parenting through the use of PACE
  • Secondary trauma on the system and from the system that supports the young person
  • This will include a Powerpoint presentation, video clips, case study, group work, interactive discussion and experiential exercises

Intended impact on practice:

  • Have a trauma informed approach with children and young people who present with attachment difficulties
  • Have an understanding of what helps and the role all have to play in this
  • Gain some practical skills in how to help young people who have attachment difficulties and developmental trauma
