Introduction to Mental Health in Children and Young People with Learning Difficulties / Disabilities

This 3 hour workshop aims to increase understanding and awareness of mental health difficulties experienced by children and young people with learning difficulties / disabilities, increase ability to identify early signs of mental health difficulties within the learning difficulty / disability population and increase awareness of information and support services in your local area.

Part day course for

Practitioners from any agency (such as Social Workers, Family Support Workers, Home School Link Workers, Foster Carers, Youth Support Workers and GPs) who work with children (aged 3 years plus) or young people with learning disabilities who have mental health problems, or with their families, who live within the HCC boundaries

Learning outcomes:

Participants will learn how to:

  • Define learning difficulties / disabilities
  • Define mental health difficulties common in children / young people with learning difficulties / disabilities
  • Identify the prevalence of mental health difficulties in children / young people with learning difficulties / disabilities
  • Identify early signs and behaviours associated with mental health difficulties in children and young people with learning difficulties / disabilities
  • Explain the CAMHS referral criteria (who can refer and how to refer)
  • Identify local support services
  • Use the Specialist CAMHS Consultation Line
