Introduction to Mental Health in Children and Young People

This half day course aims to increase understanding and awareness of some of the mental health difficulties (including anxiety) commonly experienced by children and young people, increase ability to identify early signs of some of these difficulties and increase awareness of information and support services in your local area

Part day course for

Practitioners from any agency (such as Social Workers, Family Support Workers, Home School Link Workers, Foster Carers, Youth Support Workers and GPs) who work with children (aged 8 or over) or young people affected by mental health issues, or with their families, who live within the HCC boundaries

Learning outcomes:

Participants will learn how to:

  • Define the terms general mental health and anxiety
  • Identify the prevalence of mental health difficulties (including anxiety) in children and young people
  • Identify early signs and behaviours associated with common mental health difficulties (including anxiety) and some preventative strategies to support young people
  • Identify when diagnosis is needed (labelling)
  • Provide information on the CAMHS referral criteria (what will be accepted, who can refer and how to refer)
  • Identify alternative local support services - Service Directory
  • Use the Specialist CAMHS Consultation Line
  • Use a basic tool when educating children and young people about mental health awareness as part of the PSHE curriculum
  • Provide practical advice on children's emotional well being
